Baláta lápThe beautiful large area of the forest also hides environmental protection values. Lake Baláta, which is located south of Kaszó, has been a highly protected area of national importance since 1942. There are a number of rare species among its rich flora and fauna; it is the habitat of botanical rarities that are well-known across Europe. The ecological condition of the area and the natural and environmental protection value of the various associations have grown continuously in the past years.

Baláta lápThere are vegetations of seaweed with floating bog islands, tussocks, reed bog, willow peat-bog, alder sphagnum bog and bog English oak woods on the area of Lake Baláta.

From among the flora, the Aldrovanda vesiculosa is extraordinary as it is the rarity of bogs, but we can also find the Comarum palustre, the Sparganium minimum, the Urtica kioviensis, the Crocus heuffeli-anus and also the Sphagnum palustre.

Baláta lápEnvironmental protection is of course not confined to the ancient bog. The entire area requires especially careful treatment; certain parts even need daily attention.

Animals that are rare in Hungary, such as the white-tailed eagle, the black stork, and the black woodpecker, have also chosen the Kaszó forest as their nesting place.
